Students at IOU enjoy the support of dedicated full-time qualified tutorial assistants, who are responsible for the clarification of doubts concerning the learning materials and enhancing student comprehension of the same.
Additionally, guest lecturers from the various fields offered by IOU and beyond will be invited from time to time, each semester to enrich the program by providing an avenue for students to experience, firsthand, the cutting edge of academic research and professional expertise. The whole student body will be informed of the timings and students will be given ample opportunity to participate. The sessions will also be recorded and kept in the IOU archive for later viewing by those unable to watch the sessions live.
The Tutorial Assistant
Each study unit will have a tutorial assistant assigned for one or more subjects. The TA may or may not be the actual teacher of the course. However, the TA will have the necessary qualifications to handle all eventualities related to their given subjects. This represents the most central element in the IOU student academic support system, facilitating learning through:
- Providing further clarification for materials studied in the recorded lectures.
- Facilitating access to information resources such as online libraries and additional learning materials
- Monitoring portfolios and the ongoing students work program, assignments, and regular attendance to course materials.
- Supervising student course forums to ensure that this important learning tool is properly utilized.
The tutorial assistant will work together with the Coordinator, Registrar and the Dean to ensure that all students receive the support they need to succeed in their studies.
